Game 2 report is below:

The Botany Swarm managed to eke out an overtime win against the West Auckland Admirals in front of about 260 fans to take the Toa Kauhanga Riri Tio cup away from the Admirals. The final score was 5-4 for the Swarm.

The first period was a pretty even affair for the first half of the period. Both sides got their chances with the Admirals hitting a post and the Swarm coming close but getting denied by Csaba Kercso-Magos. The Swarm got into some penalty trouble by picking up two penalties in quick succession. This led to an Admirals 5 on 3 powerplay which resulted in a goal by Jake Ratcliffe, assisted by Nick Craig and Gareth McLeish. The Swarm soon got another chance with a clear breakaway only to be denied by Kercso-Magos again.

After killing off a penalty assessed in the dying seconds of the first period, the Swarm began to dominate the play. The Admirals started to run into some penalty problems of their own picking up three penalties in a short period of time. The Swarm’s Sami Saastamoinen evened the score at 11:22. Nick Craig scored at 4:50 to pull the Admirals into the lead again. But the Swarm would tie the game again on a goal by Ritchie Hopkinson, assisted by Oliver Hay and Logan Fraser. The end of the second period had the game tied at 2.

The third period saw a lot more back and forth action until 16:20 when Sami Saastamoinen put the Swarm ahead, assisted by Jordan Challis. The Admirals picked up a bench minor penalty at 15:24 and were put on the penalty kill. The penalty killers did an awesome job with Mario Mjellelin picking up short-handed goal at 14:13 to tie things up at 3. Both teams got their chances for the next part of the frame with the Admirals hitting another post and Kercso-Magos having to drop his stick and blocker to cover the puck in a crazy scramble in the crease. The Swarm went up 4-3 at 7:20 on a goal by Hopkinson assisted by Henderson and Vortanov. The Swarm picked up a penalty at 2:48 and the Admirals went on the power play. Early in the power play, the Admirals pulled their goalie to make it a 6-on-4 and the additional skater proved to be the charm as the Admirals scored with 2:39 remaining in the period to tie things up again. Csaba Kercso-Magos would need to make one more big glove save with 38 seconds left to hold onto the tie.

The game then went into a 5 minute overtime with 4 skaters a side. Both sides got their chances but it was Sami Saastamoinen who would take the shot to end the game.

Final score 5-4 to the Botany Swarm and despite the loss the fans who came to the game were treated to an extremely entertaining game!
