Game reports: Split results vs Canterbury

The West Auckland Admirals played their first game in a 2 game home stand tonight and in what can only be described as a messy game, came out on the wrong end of an 8-6 score.

The Admirals started strong in the first period with the majority of the play in the Devils’ zone for the first five minutes. Andy Hart and Mario Mjelleli both hit posts in the first part of the period. The Devils got a break away about the mid point of the period but were denied by Rick Parry. Nick Henderson got the Admirals on the board at 6:22, assisted by Andy Hart. The Devils tied the score at 4:55 on a wrap around goal by Matthew Puntereri. Hart hit another post at about the 2:45 mark – no goal and the period ended a 1-1 tie.

Period 2 was a hectic affair with both sides scoring 3 goals resulting in a 4-4 tie by the time the dust settled. Devils scored first at 18:32 on a goal by Liam Dallimore. The Admirals responded at 17:34 on a goal by Mario Mjelleli. AJ Spillar made a magnificent effort starting from his end and lugged the puck up ice to put the Admirals up 3-2. The Devils responded 12:51 on a goal by Archer and then pulled ahead at 11:58 on another goal by Archer. It was looking like the Devils were going to take a lead into the dressing room but the Admirals scored with just 7 seconds to go on a goal by Mario Mjelleli. It was a 4-4 tie at the end of the second period.

The Devils pushed the issue early in the third period with Parry making a couple of good saves to keep things tied. A bad turnover in the Admirals zone, led to a Devils goal at 17:10 by Jaxson Lane. The Devils would go up by two at 16:04 on a goal by Chris Eaden. The Admirals responded less than a minute later on a goal by Mario Mjelleli giving him his hat trick on the night. The Devils scored their 7th goal on the night at 4:21 – Matthew Puntereri’s second of the night. The Admirals pulled their goalie in the dying minutes of the game leading to the Devils taking a penalty at 1:18. The Admirals scored on the ensuing powerplay – Blake Jackson making the score 7-6. The Devils added an empty net goal (Archer’s third goal) with 18 seconds left in the game.

The West Auckland Admirals played their second game in a back-to-back home stand against the Red Devils Sunday night and the results were significantly better than Saturday. When all was said and done, the Admirals posted a 7-2 win to even up the series this weekend.

The first period was a spirited affair with lots of hitting and a very fast pace. The Admirals controlled the majority of the play for the first half of the period. Mario Mjelleli put the Admirals on the board first at 9:15, assisted by Blake Jackson and Justin Daigle. The Admirals continued to pressure but the Red Devils goalie thwarted their efforts on a number of occasions. At the end of the first period, the Admirals were up 1-0.

The second period started out much like the first with lots of spirited play back and forth. Mario Mjelleli picked up a penalty early in the period and the Devils put on the pressure but Csaba Kercso-Magos closed the door. Robbie Chamberlain put the Admirals up 2-0 on a scramble in front of the net at 15:51. Less than a minute later Nick Henderson added another goal unassisted, bringing the score to 3-0 for the Admirals. Andy Hart scored by deflecting a Justin Daigle shot from the point at 8:15, bringing the score to 4-0 for the Admirals. Nick Henderson picked up a penalty at 3:22 and on the ensuing power play Chris Eaden put the Red Devils on the board. At the end of the second period, the score stood at 4-1 for the Admirals.

The Red Devils pushed the play early in the 3rd period and came close to scoring but the play was waved off due to goalie interference. The Admirals came close at about the 15 minute mark when Nick Henderson beat the goalie but not the goal post. Taylor Rooney made it 5-1 at 13:16 on an excellent feed from Dylan Dickson with the other assist coming from Steven Huish. Chris Eaden added another tally for the Red Devils at 9:07 bringing the score to 5-2. Blake Jackson rang one off the post at 7:49 – close but no cigar. Stevie Huish made it 6-2 at 7:05 assisted by Dylan Dickson and Taylor Rooney. Tom Tracy added a power play goal at 3:05 to make the score 7-2, assisted by AJ Spillar and Mario Mjelleli. The Red Devils pushed to try to add to their score but time was not their friend and when the dust settled, the final score ended up 7-2 for the Admirals.

The boys will be on the road next weekend – off to Queenstown for a double header against the Stampede!
